Meadow Oaks farm is run by the Walkers; Greg, Lynn and Ian.  We raise registered Angus cattle Northwest of Lafayette Indiana.  We do not raise the biggest, nor the fastest growing, highest marbling nor the smallest or the easiest fleshing or whatever catch phrase is out there today to signify rarity and extreme value to keep you ahead of the Pack!  Nope, sorry, that is not us.  What we try to do though, is to produce a superior and clean grassfed product with the right genetics to get the job done.  Along the way, we find that we use less fuel, have greater enjoyment and are going to leave our land better than we found it.  We also know that when we eat a grassfed steak or enjoy a grassfed hamburger, we are promoting our own better health and that is important.

What we have been striving to do from the very beginning is to produce a type of female that you do not have to check every two hours when she is calving.  Actually we never check our cows when they are calving.  We look once a day to tag and weigh what was born the night before.  We expect our cows and heifers to calve on their own...  and they do.  We also object to being assaulted by a new mother and for our cows to be flighty and ill behaved and they aren't.  We are opposed to helping calves nurse. Since we began in 1999 with the registered Angus, we have chosen our bulls and replacements from our trouble free cows and most cows in the herd are linebred back to 4, now elderly cows, and we aim to keep it that way.  We have saved heifers from those 4 basic troublefree cow family lines and saved our own bulls from those lines, anything else became T bones.  No outside females have been purchased after the second year.

4 years ago, we added Ohlde Cattle Co. Genetics by purchasing 3 Ohlde bulls and using OCC bulls AI.  Still the same good old girls, but with the addition of all that Ohlde's are famous for.  This was done to bring down the frame size of our cattle to the 4-5 frame size, to eliminate some of the air between their bellies and the ground.  We want a thick, moderate easy keeping cow that doesn't require owning a feed mill to maintain.

We shoot for the center, for all the truly economical traits that benefit the Cow-calf man, not necessarily the packer.  You know what we found out?  Our calves still grow, recent AHIR averages on the bulls have been above 650 lbs and the heifers above 600 no creep.  We have never had a complaint, but only rave reviews on our freezer beef, so carcass quality is there, whether grassfed or natural grain finished, as we can do both.

We are producing a type, we think it is a good type, the type that will make you money, or give you a great grassfed eating experience, so give us a call or send an email and come out and look.
